DESCRIPTION

This course provides learners with current methodologies for teaching English learners (ELs) of different ages and learning contexts. They will discuss and practice a variety of strategies and techniques for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). While exploring best practices for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including grammar and vocabulary, course participants will learn how to create an effective and communicative language classroom for all learners. They will examine what “best practices” means in the context of teaching English in the 21st century, where English is an international language, and use of English incorporates modern technologies

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Compare and contrast traditional and modern second language teaching methods
  • Examine their current instructional strategies for ways to provide active, student-centered learning that helps develop learners’ self-efficacy and supports lifelong learning
  • Develop effective activities for listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Develop a lesson activity that incorporates critical thinking and problem solving skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation, decision making, and creative thinking)
  • List learning style differences and the needs of diverse learners
  • Summarize the impact reflective teaching has on teachers’ perspectives toward teaching English and their classroom practice, as well as learners’ attitudes and motivations to learn English

KATI MILTER

TESOL Instructor, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Kati Milter, PhD, works at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

She teaches EFL as well as graduate TESOL courses. She serves on the TESOL International team, where she is the coordinator of the TESOL Core Certificate Program. Her other activities include face-to-face and online teacher training and designing online courses.

Yuliya Schmaltz

YULIYA SCHMALTZ

TESOL Instructor, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Yuliya Schmaltz, Ph. D, has worked in the field of higher education for over 15 years, part of which she worked in Kazakhstan and in Central Europe.

Her professional experience includes EFL, ESL, and teacher training. In addition to teaching, Yuliya’s expertise includes developing and maintaining program and course curricula.
